Trying to develop a security strategy and solution for your company can be difficult without help, but it is an integral part of your business’s infrastructure. Here are some points to help you get started in vetting and selecting security companies to work with for your security solution.

HOW TO START YOUR RESEARCH

Finding a solution that can tackle your security challenges starts with establishing your goals and ensuring you know the answers to the following questions:

1. Do you have a dedicated security team in-house, or do you need a solution that offers you support outside of the organization?
2. Do you want the ability to scale the solution?
   • If so, how many sites do you have currently and how many do you see going into the future?
   • How much scalability are you looking for? Citywide? Countywide? Nationwide? Are you looking for an international security solution?
3. What about your environment is dynamic, and what is static? I.e. Do you hold public events on-site or see fluctuation in foot traffic depending on the time of year?
4. Do you need the ability to monitor locations off-site from a single command center?

After answering these questions, you probably have a clearer idea of what kind of security technology solution you are looking for. If you have trouble answering any of these questions, you are not just looking for a product, you are looking for a service provider.

HOW TO VET THE COMPANIES YOU HAVE FOUND

Here are the areas that you may use to analyze a security company you are considering to work with:

1. Does this company address the current challenges you are facing with their solution?
2. Does this company address potential challenges you will face in the future?
3. Does this company offer supporting services to accompany any products they are offering?
4. Is their solution scalable and amendable to technology advancement?

If you do not know the answers to the above questions based on what the company has provided you, make sure to ask them about how the solution looks in a year, in five years, and what they see for the system in ten years. Make sure they are able to speak to the systems’ growth, adaptation, integration, and scalability.
